Gunnar Gronski

I started working with Steven in the spring of 2021 after several years lifting weights for sports, but having absolutely no competitive powerlifting experience. Before his coaching, I really had only ever cared about pushing my squat numbers high. I benched, but never considered myself to be good at it, and rarely ever deadlifted. I had a good baseline as an athlete but Steven's knowledge and even-tempered coaching has allowed for me to grow tremendously as a powerlifter. I started with a 525 lb. squat, a very ugly 315 lb. bench and had never even gotten close to a 500 lb. deadlift. I have since done three meets with Steven as my coach, improving my total in each of them. As of right now, my all-time best lifts are a 640 lb. squat, a 425 lb. bench and a 677 lb. deadlift. Outside of the continued progress in the training aspect, Steven as a coach has allowed me to really fall in love with this sport. Through my time under him I have had several life circumstances that required me to take breaks from my training, including times that affected various meet preps. Rather than get angry or make me feel guilty for missing valuable training time, he understood what I was going through and that I've got more going on than just powerlifting. That was greatly appreciated and allowed for powerlifting to stay fun. I also admire Steven's ability as a coach to clearly communicate when I can do better, and being able to do so in a respectful manner. Another thing I appreciate about my training under him is that it stays dynamic. I can tell that he hasn't simply settled and figured that my form and cues are "good enough." I have continued to improve because Steven stays closely connected with my training and I can tell he wants to see me grow just as much as I do.
